Summer is a great time to get your student involved in an internship. With summer right around the corner now is a great time to start the internship hunt with your student. Internships can be a key part of career and major selection as well as scholarship money.
An internship helps a student build their resume. It also offers many other possibilities. Sometimes students are able to parlay an internship into a scholarship and even a job down the road. Even if the company that your student interns for does not have a scholarship they may come up with one as a thank you for a job well done. Good interns grow on corporate professionals and often they will bend over backwards to help the student.
Internships are best for high school and college students. Here are a few pointers:
If your student is offered an internship make sure it is with a reputable company that will teach the student about the job. Unfortunately, there are companies out there just looking for free labor.
Make sure the student works hard, brushes up on business etiquette and views this as an opportunity not just a chore. Working hard and showing professionalism will not only be great training for after graduation but may result in a job upon graduation or a scholarship for college.
Also, help your student brush up on networking. Make sure they keep a list of contacts and emails. Have the student follow up with thank you cards and emails for anyone willing to help. These connections can be invaluable. If the right person takes your student under their wing it can be very rewarding.
Last, internships are getting a little harder to find. Don’t let that stop your student. If a company says we don’t have an internship your student can offer to develop one for no cost. Your student may want to offer to give a presentation on starting an internship. Corporate men and women love to see determination in young people.
