US News College Rankings, Too Much Hype?

Every year I see families mystified by the US News and World Report “College Rankings”. They feel their student must get into a college ranked in this report or their life will be over. Unfortunately this causes many problems for families.

Every year students go to unranked colleges that provide a great college experience, offer great employment opportunities and job placement after graduation and most importantly allow the student to graduate and not place an insurmountable debt burden on the family.

When selecting a college the most important issue is finding the right fit for the student. The student and college need to be correctly matched academically and socially.

The second most important consideration is affordability. As college expenses grow at a rapid pace many families are sacrificing their financial well being to send their children off to college. Unfortunately, families making these financial mistakes do not realize a much more affordable college would have yielded similar or even better results.

Even worse the mistake does not set in until it is time to repay the loans. It is easy to borrow and accumulate debt but it can be very difficult and stressful to repay it.
